For your information the airport at Amsterdam is situated about 18 km from the centre of Amsterdam.

Amsterdam got its name when a dam was put in place on the River Amstel during the 13th century. Popular belief is that The Hague is the capital of The Netherlands when in actual fact it is Amsterdam.

An enjoyable way to enjoy the sights and sounds of Amsterdam is to cruise along the canals. There are four main canals and 1,281 bridges and many cruise operators who provide all sorts of themed journeys along what is the city's intricate water system. Many cruises are available all year round. As a suggestion, set by a day to enjoy the Amsterdam's museums and climb aboard the museum boat where you will be taken in style to all of the popular museums.

One stop is that of Rembrandts Museum at the Jodenbreestraat. Here you will marvel in disbelief at the original collection of 250 etchings and a series of drawings by the great Dutch master Rembrandt. In addition to the house that Rembrandt once lived, you will surf the canal waters over to the Anne Frank House. The house is presently a museum, but was once the home of the Frank family. In fear of capture by German invasion forces, the Frank family spent years in hiding. The daughter, Anne, wrote her incredible diary during the two years of her concealment. The house (her home) has been conserved by the Anne Frank Foundation and was opened as a museum 45 years ago.

The famous Rijksmuseum containing The Netherlands largest collection of history and art including paintings, Asian art, dolls houses and history of Netherlands exhibition. The main event at the Rijksmuseum is that of the celebrated works from the country’s fabulous Golden Age including Vermeer, Steen and Rembrandt.

For an unmissable art experience, situated between the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum is that of the Van Gogh museum. A very full demonstration of Vincent Van Gogh's life is exhibited with the confines of this landmark and you will enjoy in excess of 200 of his oil- covered canvasses. In addition to his paintings are his hundreds of drawings as well as overwhelming amounts of written documentation by the once greatly misunderstood painter. A must for Impressionist fans, fans of modern art and fans of Holland!

Everybody wants to experience Amsterdam's Red Light District. It is located in the area around the Oude Kerk region where many of the city's most impressive buildings are also found. The Red Light area can be found running between Warmoesstraat and Nieumakt square. Stag Nights are a regular event in the De Wallen area, particularly attracted here by the window prostitution and sex shops. This area is particularly attractive because it is where people come to be themselves. It is a lively energetic place where you will find a good cup of coffee, greater variety of people, shops and places to eat.

Dam Square is the place to return to time after time because it is a tourist hotspot generally and a great place to enjoy street entertainment and people watching while you sip a well-deserved cappuccino! There are so many tourist attractions in Amsterdam that visiting a mere sample of them could set a family back a small fortune. Amsterdam offers it treasured tourists the Amsterdam Card saving its users a lot of money! Developed by the Amsterdam Tourist Board, the card entitles you to free admission to all the famous museums as well as a free canal cruise and discounts to many restaurants and shops. In addition the Amsterdam Card entitles you to free travel around the city. You can obtain an Amsterdam Card for 24, 48 and 72 hours. A 24-hour card costs EUR 31 (GBP 21), 48 hours EUR 41 (GBP 28) or 72 hours EUR 51 (GBP 34.50) and is obtained from Tourist Information (VVV).

In the middle of the sometimes all too busy city centre is a peaceful pocket of green space nicknamed 'the town's pride and joy'. Amsterdam’s particularly beautiful botanical gardens, Hortus have occupied this spot for over 400 years and maintained with pride that its prestige amongst its locals deserves. A haven of quietness for when city life gets a bit too overwhelming!

Sailors, navigators and sea faring types from all over the world enjoy an impressive Tall Ship parade of 30 vessels at Amsterdam's 'Sail Amsterdam' naval parade. Unfortunately this only happens every five years, the next one being in August 2005.

Continuing on a maritime theme, should you find yourself in Amsterdam in August, you will love the colourful 'Gay Parade'. The Gay Parade happens every year and consists of a procession of brightly painted and wildly decorated boats. Its a great camera opportunity not to be missed and is best savoured from any of the bridges that cross the Prinsengracht Canal.
