An intriguing collection of old and new, ancient and modern, the city of Basel is situated in the north west of Switzerland. Its exciting arrangement of vintage and modern architecture has come as a result of its increasing trading prowess in particularly following the building of the Rhein Bridge in the thirteenth century.

Centrally located and bordered by Germany and France, the city of Basel was born and gained its maturity on the banks of the Rhine River. Basel’s presence on the river over the years contributed to the city’s importance and prominence in national affairs and was also the only location (at one time) of solitary bridge mid way between the sea and Lake Constance.

Alleged to be one of Europe’s leading intellectual centres, remember to visit Switzerland’s oldest senior place of learning that of fifteenth century Basel University. Basel has always had a reputation for breeding humanism and this it perpetuates with its considerable contribution of internationally excellent museums and events. The world’s largest and most important Art exhibition called Art Fair is held here amongst the city’s hundreds of galleries.

Divided into eighteen individual unofficial quarters, much of Basel falls within the two districts of Greater and Basel Proper otherwise known as Gros Basel and Kleinbasel respectively. The twelfth century romanesque Munster armed with its twin towers provide the most generous of panoramic views across the city and looks as good from the inside as it looks spectacular from the outside. Munsterplatz flanking the Town Hall (Rathaus) is the city’s largest and most atmospheric of public squares and a great place from which to navigate the city. Munsterplatz is also a popular haunt for traditional food.

The delightfully aged and picturesque St Alban district is where to head to for the Museum of Art or the Kunstmuseum. A popular local art gallery is that of the Museum of Cartoons and Caricatures. This particular museum inhabits a dramatic medieval building and houses in excess of three thousand original drawings. In the area also and equally popular with visitors and locals alike are the Museum of Contemporary Art and Museum of Paper.

As well as topping all others in the realms of intelligence, Basel has a reputation for being successful at sporting competitions. In confirmation of this coy statement, the unbeatable world Grand Slam champion tennis player, Roger Federer was born here. Beat that!

Basel Airport

Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg International Airport serves Switzerland, Germany and France. It is the only airport in the world operated by three countries.

Basel, Mulhouse and Freiberg are all with an hour’s journey from the EuroAirport at 15, 30 and 55 minutes respectively.

The No 50 Bus service from leaves from Basel Train Station to the EuroAirport. Please allow 20 minutes for the duration of the journey.

For access to the EuroAirport by train if passengers arrive from France, Switzerland and Germany travel to Basle Central Train Station with the Swiss, French or German train network. There is the Bus service to the EuroAirport from Basle Central Train Station (SBB)

If travelling from France, travel to Mulhouse Central train Station then take the shuttle bus to EuroAirport.

If travelling by taxi, the fare from Mulhouse to the airport is Euro 35 (£24.00) during the day and Euro 50 (£34.00) at night.

Taxis from Basel cost Euro 40 (£28.00).

The airport is divided into two sides, one that serves the French side and the other serving the Swiss. A centrally located Customs point allows for ease of emigration from one side to the other.

The EuroAirport has 3 airport codes. Basel has the Swiss code of BSL, Mulhouse is the French code of MLH and the international code is EAP. This is due to the airport’s rather complicated diplomatic layout.
