Nestling on the northern Spanish coastline, Santander is a popular port city in the region of Cantabria. A dedicated capital city of Cantabria, Santander offers an attractive city centre that is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Basque country and the Asturias.

Once a summer retreat of Spainís monarchy, in particular, King Alfonso XIII, the city continues to attract a holidaying market for it mild climate, glorious beaches and its hula-hooping competition.

Santanderís origins were of considerable greatness because of its connections through its port. Not only was it a significant Middle Ages port, it took particular advantage when trading with the ĎNew Worldí took off.

If it werenít for the horrific fires of 1941, there would be an incredible ancient city to enjoy. However, what remained after a two day onslaught of flames is a city restored and rebuilt closely as possible to its original format.

The cathedral which was 13th century Romanesque was almost completely gutted and much of the medieval old town was lost also. The devastation didnít end there for during these fires, thousands of people lost their homes and their worldly goods although the mortality outcome was actually and astoundingly low. In a multiple of ways, the great fire of 1941 had a hugely destructive effect on Santander.

Although ravaged by the fires, Santander Cathedral, in its restored condition, continues to enthral all who visit her. Containing the tomb of Marcelino Menendez y Pelayo, Santanderís famous historian, the cathedral is particularly intriguing for its north aisle roman ruins.

You canít visit Cantabria without catching a glimpse of Spainís most talented forefather, Francisco Goya! The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts in Santander is where to find not one but several of his masterpieces including his portrait of Ferdinand VII. The museum can be located in the proximity of the cityís Town Hall building and offers really good exhibitions by a vast force of contemporary artists from Spain and beyond.

When you get tired of trawling the streets of the city centre, worry not for rescue is at hand in the form of the El Sardinero beaches. A steady walk or a trolley ride from the centre of Santander, this stunning resort is a mere two and a half kilometres away.

Additionally, if you feel the need to replace pounding the bustling city streets with some lovely clean air, Santander is a stoneís throw away from the majesty of the glorious Cantabrian Mountains and the National Park Picos de Europa. Yet another good reason to get away to Santander!

One of the most popular summer events is that of Santanderís Music and Dance Festival. Held in the month of August and coinciding with other religious events, expect the town to be fairly packed as the festival attracts people from all over Spain .

When in Santander, why not take an easy drive along the A-8 out to Bilbao. It is only about a hundred and sixteen kilometres away along the Bilbao to Santander road and is full of interesting attractions to experience. Although Bilbao isn't at first glance, a picture postcard type of destination it has a lot to offer visitors on the outskirts of its busy port area and surrounding countryside.

One of the biggest crowd pullers is the newly built Guggenheim Museum complete with spectacular exterior that is a work of art in its own right. The Museum when built in 1997 marked the beginning of an exciting cityscape revitalisation and houses the works of the great modern artists of the 20th century such as Kandinsky, Cezanne and Klee. Other exciting construction projects in Bilbao included the very new Bilbao Airport as well as the Euskalduna Palace, the Abandoibarra project and the Bilbao Underground system.

A number of popular attractions in Bilbao, there are non so spectacular than the shiny new Guggenheim Museum. If you love art and you love architecture too, why not join the thousands who flock here every year? Resembling a metallic flower and breaking down the constraints of traditional architecture, the Guggenheim was designed with a distinct absence of right angles and is an impressive sight! As well as exhibiting the big names of modern art, the Guggenheim also prides itself in showcasing the work of up and coming Spanish artists. Art lovers with a thirst for paintings that even the Guggenheim didn't satisfy, will enjoy the fruits of the Museo de Bellas. This discreetly fronted art gallery houses a diverse range of works from the Flemish painters of the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries as well as an impressive collection of paintings by Goya, El Greco, Velasquez, Bacon, Gaugin and Picasso.

Santander Airport is approximately five kilometres from Santander city centre.

A shuttle service to and from the airport to the bus station runs every half an hour and costs 1 euro 50 for a fifteen minute journey.

If you are travelling by car, the airport can be reached from the city centre along the A-8 Santander to Bilbao highway. The airport is signposted.

A taxi journey into town will set you back 15 euros approximately.
