Situated in the west of France, Poitiers, the town of a hundred steeples, offers a vibrant country town, excellent location for touring as well as two thousand years of architectural heritage. The capital city of battle torn Poitou-Charentes Poitiers nestles within the endearing landscape of La Vienne.

Upon first inspection, especially if one approaches the town from Tours on the Autoroute de l’Aquitaine, Poitiers appears uninteresting and bland. Drive a little closer and you will see Poitiers has a lot more to offer than at first you thought! The region of La Vienne is as popular for its outdoors pursuits as it is its vast range of historical attractions that date back for two thousand years.

A country town built upon a hillside, Poitiers offers picturesque surroundings and centuries of historical attractions and tons of lovely sight-seeing. Poitiers was once the seat of the Dukes of Aquitaine which explains the religious atmosphere about the town.

To start with, how about an eleventh century church, Poitiers offers you for your sight seeing pleasure, its magnificent Notre Dame La Grande Church. Some half timbered medieval houses are not too far away in the rue de la Chaine and mark the territory of the rich and well to do citizens of the town. The eighteenth century Parc de Blossac is situated in the south of the town, and the place to enjoy some peace and tranquillity. If you are lucky a game of boules will be in progress and you can enjoy the trials and tribulations of the most idiosyncratic game of France.

If a tendency to shop comes upon you, then head over to the Place Charles-de-Gaulle. This is where the main food and clothes market happens and you can be sure of some bargains.

More brilliant features in the town include the 19th century Palais de Justice (complete with 13th century incredible gothic hall), the Espace Mendes-France Planetarium and Laserium and the St Pierre Cathedral. While the 12th century building of St Pierre Cathedral is stunning and an amazing attraction in its own right, take a look inside at the organ, it is the eighteenth century church organ that steals the show. Last but by no means least is the 4th century Church of St Jean which could be the oldest building in French Christendom.

Holidaymakers (particularly those with children in tow) find it next to impossible to visit Poitiers without spending a day or two at Futuroscope! Packed with high-tech gadgets and white knuckle rides, this theme park satisfies by a long way the needs of the 21st century child (and adult!). Only eight kilometres away from Poitiers, visitors tend to enjoy the both of both worlds and spend the night in Poitiers while screaming at the top of their lungs on La Gyratour during the day. Futuroscope prides itself on virtual reality rides. Don’t be fooled, these can be pretty hair raising!

The layout at Futuroscope has been given some thought as the complex is set amid a landscape of lakes and other similarly enjoyable attractions. The theme park is so vast that it helps to be distracted between rides, which tend to be some distance apart.

The park can get busy during peak times and so it is recommended that you arrive early to avoid the queues. The cost for one day in the park is 31 euros.

If you are in Paris and the children scream that they want to go to Futuroscope, it is no problem. Just head over to the Paris-Montparnasse station and jump on the high speed TGV. Futuroscope has its own stop on the line, for your ease and convenience.

A short drive from Poitiers is the vibrant market town of Chauvigny. A busy town, its citizens are generally employed along the banks of the Vienne at lumber
Mills and porcelain manufacturing plants. In the shadows of Chauvigny is the old town which possesses the magnificent ruins of five medieval castles. Also in the old town is the St Pierre Church fashioned the Romanesque way, all austere and forbidding. Chateau d’Harcourt in the old town has been better preserved than others, like Chateau Baronnial and is considerably more interesting to wander round.

You can’t go to a market town with enjoying its market! Situated between the Notre- Dame and the river, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the market is thriving and as busy as it can get with oysters and crayfish changing hands at the speed of light!

The neighbouring town of Parthenay offers quiet charm and one or two interesting medieval features like the Gothic Porte de l’Horloge, the Romanesque Church of Ste-Croix and the fortified gateway that leads to the old Citadel.
