The third largest city in the country, Lyon is situated in the middle eastern region of France approximately four hundred kilometres south east of Paris. With more cafes and restaurants per head than any other European city, Lyon takes its gastronomy seriously and is well respected for its culinary distinction. When visiting the city set your standards high and you will not be disappointed!
Set in the highly industrialized and densely populated region of the Rhone-Alpes, the international city of Lyon offers the tourist huge amounts of culture, vast arrays of sight seeing attractions and much much more.
With excellent transport and access links to all significant European cities, it is no wonder that the Rhone-Alpes region has become a commercialized hub for trade.
Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with delightful countryside on its outskirts as well as attractive parks and green spaces within its city limits blended nicely together with huge amounts of impressive architecture, it is not difficult to see why. Well situated for the Mediterranean, Provence and the Alps, Lyon benefits from the popularity of nearby attractions as much as for its own.
Labelled the 'Silk Capital of the World' because of its long standing textiles manufacturing industry, Lyon has a concentration of artistic workshops and fashion designers. For a better understanding of early silk making an excursion over to Croix-Rousse is recommended. It is here you will discover the enormous weave loom buildings surrounded by a labyrinthe of tiny passageways called 'the Traboules'. Wonderfully atmospheric it is no surprise that traditionally artists are attracted to living here in the Croix-Rousse hill region. While here, don't forget to enjoy a visit to the Jardin des Chartreux for a lovely place to while away some time and to enjoy the breathtaking views across the city.
Lyon has so much to offer in terms of diversity and activity with no shortage of impressive tourist attractions. A great part of the city for the most monuments is that of Terreaux. The Opera de Lyon is situated here and a 'must see' with its neo-classical architecture and its elegant roman-temple styled interior deco. In addition Terreaux offers the Palais Saint Pierre home to the famous Musee des Beaux-Arts.
While in the city, you will enjoy the majestic structures of the Aqueduc de Chaponost. To transfer water to fulfill the city's incredible water needs, four aquaducts came into existence. Lyon, with all its elegant fountains, baths and latrines and discovering rain water levels insufficient for its needs constructed these immense arch bottomed canals to bring water into the city. The ruined arches of the Chaponost aquaduct continue to impress its visitors.
A popular sight-seeing focus of the city is found in the Fourviere hill district. Situated in the heart of Lyon, you will marvel at the Basilique de Fourviere as well as the theatre and Gallo-Roman ampitheatre. Presqu'ile in downtown Lyon on the other hand does not offer a n easy concentration of sight-seer's delights. Being the commercial headquarters of Lyon, Presqu'ile combines the present and the modern with the past and the historic. For example, within the depths of this business and office block district you will come face to face with the Musee des Tissus as well as Louis XIV on horseback dominating the grand Place Bellecour.
For lovers of architecture, the icing on the cake is found in Lyon's rue Saint Jean where Europe's most substantial collection of Renaissance buildings!
