Charming Chambery is situated in Savoie and has previously served as the region’s historical capital as far back as the 13th century.

Chambery Airport is just outside of the town of Chambery and next door to Aix-les-Bains in a tranquil little town called Viviers-du-Lac. Well known for it’s facility for providing a source of thermal healing for the ill and inflamed, this spa town is well placed for exploring one of France’s largest lakes, Lac du Bourget.

If not eagerly passing through the airport town of Viviers on your way to the city itself or your skiing resort, why not spend a couple of hours acquainting yourself with what’s is right in front of you. The sights here are as dramatic as the stunning peak of Mount Revard that looms over you. Aside from the Lake and its picturesque surroundings, you might like to visit the Thermes Nationaux d’Aix-les-Bains (thermal baths). These baths with their adjacent thermal caves are open to the public and date back to 1857. Here in Viviers, you can spend a few hours enjoying a variety of works by Degas, Rodin, Cezanne and others at the Musee Faure. Forever insisting the importance of peace and relaxation, the offer of some uninterrupted meditation is always available at the lakeside Abbey of Hautecombe.

The eighteenth century social theorist Jean-Jacques Rousseau who famously proclaimed “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains” once said of this town, "If there is in the world a little town where one tastes the sweetness of life in pleasant and certain commerce, it is Chambéry."

The town of Chambery sits on the doorstep of the French Alps and is one of the main destinations for skiers on their way to the areas resorts. With superlative road links and general accessiblity, Chambery provides entry to the Alps for business passengers of the airport as well as those arriving for more relaxing pursuits. Aside from the slopes, the region is loved for its enchanting lakes of Bourget, Geneva, Annecy and Aiguebelette.

Chambery lies in the valley that divides the Bauges mountains from the Chartreuse Massif upon the entrance of the route through the Alps to Italy. The town actually increased in size around the Chateau in the thirteenth century. The Chateau belonged to Count Thomas of Savoie. Savoy’s capital city between 1295 and 1563, Chambery’s history is closely associated with the House of Savoy.

It wasn’t until 1860, that Chambery became incorporated by France having belonged to Italy till that date. In the sixteenth century the capital of Savoie, Chambery was replaced by Turin. Today much of the elegance of the previous glory days of Chambery is in evidence with sublime Italian architecture all around.

While in Chambery, it is recommended you submerge yourself in the experience of the Parc des Bauges. The Parc is fairly secluded and is an excellent location for enjoying fantastic natural scenery and local plentiful wildlife. As you traverse the welcoming countryside you will almost undoubtedly discover enchanting miniscule villages that pepper the scenery. All the prettiness of the rural landscape is forgotten when you stumble upon the forbidding 11th century Chateau de Miolans. Upon a hilltop surrounded by vineyards, this was once a place of incarceration, and one of its more famous inmates, the Marquis de Sade.

A walk around the Old Town of Chambery answers a few questions as to how the town looked seven hundred years ago. The centre is delightfully historic and easily traversed via its pedestrianised streets. Expect to meet elegant fountains, cosy courtyards, many mansion houses and in the heart of the old town, the Place Saint Leger. Here invites a popular spot with offers of a much needed break from the sight seeing itinerary and a good spot for meeting friends.

Head over to the Rue Croix d’Or for the more incredible mansion houses like the 17th century Hotel de Chateauneuf and the Hotel de la Perouse complete with Flamming Heart fountain. Other popular features here include the 17th century Church of Notre Dame and the 18th century St Francois Cathedral.

One of many highlights in Chambery is the abundant occurrence of Trompe l’Oeil paintings. As with many French alpine towns, the recurrence of realistic scenes is commonplace where walls are ruined and required a complete facelift. Many of the Trompe l’Oeil paintings you see around Chambery date back to the 19th century when the practise was fashionable.

There is an excellent Fine Arts Museum here that should be overlooked at your cost. The museum’s collection encompasses all that is great of Italian Art (in particular those from the Renaissance). If Italian Art takes a back seat to French Art in your opinion, this museum will not let you down. Works from the Northern School and landscapes and allegorical scenes from the French School are on hand here too.
Last but not least, the Charmettes (village) Museum provides an interesting interlude as it was where the great philosopher Rousseau spent his summers. Today it is a museum which serves to shed a light on how it must have been during the eighteenth century during those glorious summer months. Many are aware of Rousseau’s love of plants which the Museum’s garden, with its generous array of herbs and vegetables, preserved as it was then, reflects.

The Savoie Region of France

Savoie and Haute-Savoie are two departements within the region of Savoy. With its stunning alpine scenery made up of some of the most magnificent mountainous terrains in the World, Savoy belongs to the region known as the Rhône-Alpes.

Home of the more affluent skiing resorts of Val d’Isere and Meribel, Savoie maintains its traditional roots. Skiers are not the only visitors the region caters for because amid the skyscraping mountain summits, is Savoie’s National Park. A collection of glaciers and alpine valleys, the Vanoise offers excellent hiking opportunities.

Offering a tantalising platter of caves, lakes, waterfalls, gorges and nature reserves, there is a lot more on offer in the fabulous Haute-Savoie departement than merely its Alps mountain range.

Here you will find Europe’s tallest mountain, that of Mont Blanc as well as possibly one of the world’s most popular and revered skiing resorts, Chamonix, famed for hosting the very first winter Olympics in 1924.
