Sophisticated and provincial, Angers is by reputation, blooming marvellous. Endearingly named Europe’s most flowered city, Angers is the place to go to satisfy those needs for vast arrays of colourful blooms. Additionally, Angers offers more besides and is the place to go for cultural and a vibrant atmosphere.
The flowered city’s area sprawls across both sides of the River Maine, where both banks are delightfully peppered with blooms and more blooms in the guise of market gardens and flower nurseries.
Within a five hour drive of the dazzling metropolis of Paris is the extremely provincial town of Angers. While Angers and the Maine-et-Loire has a certain charm, people generally visit this backwater town for what remains of some beautiful architecture from the Middle Ages and for its close proximity to what is known as France’s ‘castle district’ in the Loire Valley. Angers itself doesn’t eat into sight seeing itineraries too much and can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace within an afternoon. Why settle for Angers when there are at least half a dozen historic towns within a short drive away, all beckoning you to pay a visit. Classic French towns like Blois, Orleans, Amboise, Tours and Samur packed with history and beautiful chateaux but a stone’s throw away.
The town’s early prosperity owed much to the local slate mined here. Back in those days, Angers was more likely to be known as the ’Black City’ (or in French, the ‘Ville Noire’) than the ‘Flower City’ as all the local roofs were decked with this shiny black resource. Today, Angers is above all a large employer of workers within the computer industry.
In the hands of the Romans, Angers was first inhabited when it was known as Juliomagus but the origins of the city date back further than that to the Lower Paleolithic era. Even the most fleeting of visits to this area and the tightest of tour schedules will not keep you away from the town’s top tourist attraction, that of the Chateau d'Angers. A fortified castle, this magnificent castle oversees the day to day activities of the River Maine and the town below upon a site that was once a Roman position of defence in its origin. Today, the castle serves as much as a museum as an object of foreboding and is where the fourteenth century Apocalypse Tapestry is held.
Other stunning buildings in the town include the eleventh century abbey of St Aubin and don’t leave town without enjoying the twelfth century St Maurice Cathedral. More tempting delights in the area include the thirteenth century ruins of the church at Toussaint as well as the austere eleventh century Notre Dame du Roceray.
A very popular attraction around town is that of the Musee David situated at the fifteenth century Logis Barrault mansion. Delights within the museum include the sculptural masterpieces by the famous local artist known as David d’Angers as well as his stunning sculpture depicting the Duke of Anjou which greets all who arrive outside of the museum.
Look out for the Hotel of Anjou, dating back to the sixteenth century, it is a stunning mansion house the local people are very proud of, and rightly so.
