Situated in the south of England Southampton in Hampshire is a busy port as well as a medieval city. Famed for launching the ill-fated maiden voyage of the Titanic as well as the pilgrim Father's voyage to the New World aboard the Mayflower.

Being the point of departure of the Pilgrim Fathers to the 'New World' 300 years ago, a memorial is kept on the Town Quay.

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 was devastating to the locals because much of the crew lived around the port. Southampton suffered the loss of five hundred people who worked aboard the famous cruise liner. A memorial exists in Andrews Park to the crew and families who lost their lives on what turned out to be a fateful voyage.

Today Southampton welcomes cruise liners to a greater extent and has a considerable container port. The port is no stranger to the regal QE2, the Queen Mary 2 and the Oriana. With a strong maritime heritage, it comes as no surprise the emphasis on sailing and water-sports you come face to face with the moment you arrive in the city. The Ocean Village development situated in the harbour presents you with a lovely marina equipped with spots from which to enjoy the views while enjoying refreshment.

Sailing is very much in the forefront of activities in the region. The choice of sailing clubs to book your lessons with is vast. Among the offerings of sailing associations include the top local places such as the Royal Southampton Yacht Club and the Weston Sailing Club. Southampton's Hamble River is pretty much the place to be for people involved in British yachting and is utilised by top international yachts people.

Southampton boasts its medieval roots at many a turn. The Southampton Bargate is considered the symbol of the city and marks the second longest piece of medieval wall in England. (The longest medieval wall in England is situated in York, by the way.) Southampton lost much of its Georgian architecture when it was bombed during WW2 by the Luftwaffe. Southampton was targeted especially hard because of its heavy industry connection in the south of the country.

However Southampton's oldest building, The Wool House near to the Town Quay escaped the wrath of the German airforce. Built in 1417 to contain the product of the wool trade England shared with Italy and Flanders, the building today serves as a Maritime Museum.

There is more to offer Southampton's visitors than its impressive harbour and medieval ruins. There is a wealth of park and open spaces (particularly in the Old Town) to enjoy. Look out for Southampton Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its array of flora and fauna which now has a wildlife centre.

When visiting Southampton, you are ideally situated for the overwhelming New Forest Park. There is the New Forest Museum to discover the origins of the park after you've enjoyed a session of rambling. Aside from walking, cycling is the ideal mode of transport for the New Forest as well as horse riding. The speed limit here is mostly 40 miles per hour and there are gravel tracks that are perfect for the cyclist and rider taking you off the beaten track to discover those New Forest wild ponies and other wildlife.

The really great thing about being in Southampton is how close you are to some of the best beaches in the country. Hayling Island offers superb Blue Flag beaches as well as excellent windsurfing and lots of water-sports opportunities.

An inspiring landscape, literary fans will know that Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility were influenced by the many facets of Hampshire. Take a Jane Austen novel with you to really understand the author's inspiration.
