The long and often tumultuous history of Zagreb originates in 1094. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century that things changed considerably for the greater good setting the wheels in motion for a prosperous future. It was in the nineteenth century that rail was introduced to the city closely followed by the introduction of the tram car as an alternative measure for getting across the city. During this time also, the foundations were set in place for many of the city’s important cultural institutions that have become top tourist attractions today.
1991 saw the devastating effects of a terrible war upon the streets of Zagreb. It was after the War of Croatian Independence that Zagreb was promoted to capital city.
A top popular attraction in the city is that of the old part of the city known as the Upper Town. Adjacent to Ban Jelacic Square is a wealth of brilliant sights to enjoy which include museums, stunning churches, palaces and omnipotent looking government offices. This is where to find the crowds of fellow tourists, satisfying their cravings for interesting places that are on offer within easy walking distance. Zagreb’s answer to London’s bustling atmospheric Leicester Square is its old town street, Tkalciceva Ulica. Here you will find many a coffee shop to refresh those parts other drinks cannot reach and enjoy a spot of atmosphere soaking whilst at it.
While in the Upper Town, you can’t miss the austere and forbidding looking Church of St Mark. Wonderfully Gothic, the church was built in the fourteenth century and completed a century later with the addition of the stunning Baroque tower.
In this cultural institution-rich city, it comes as no surprise there is in excess of three and a half million exhibits of various shapes and forms here making up around thirty museum collections.
Top museums in the city include the Archaeological Museum complete with everyone’s favourite exhibit, the Zagreb Mummy and the Croatian Natural History Museum offering a wealth of Neanderthal pieces. The Museum of the City of Zagreb offers a comprehensive history of the city from all matters cultural to everything political and economical. The museum is uniquely located with a seventeenth century complex which was once the convent of the Poor Clares.
Anyone with a penchant for machines should head over to Zagreb’s Technical Museum. Not only will you enjoy the planetarium, there is an exciting display on the scientist Nikola Tesla’s studies in electricity.
Art lovers will revel in the bouquet of art institutions available here. The Art Pavillion offers works by internationally reknowned artists like Kathe Kollwitz and Henry Moore as well as offering the Zagreb Salon and the Salon for Youth. Another not to be missed art spot in the city is that of the Croatian Naive Art Museum featuring in excess of one and a half thousand pieces of artwork by a variety of artists. The museum’s claim to fame is that it was the first of its kind anywhere in the world. Even more art is found at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This institute is contained within the Kulmer Palace and collections within include work from overseas painters as well as Croatian ones.
On matters cultural, there is the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Lovers of Eurovision are probably already aware of Zagreb’s love of pop music. For many years, the city has hosted the Zagrebfest, famed as one of the oldest pop festivals in Croatia.
Another popular happening in Zagreb is on the ‘Day of the City of Zagreb’ (November 16). Celebrations in all forms take place in and around the city and people flock from all over to have some fun.
Many people are attracted every year to the Zagreb for the skiing. Thanks to the Medvednica Mountain’s top peak, the Sljeme, this is a popular spot for some pretty challenging snow ridden slopes. Offering stunning views, Sljeme has only recently become a world class ski tournament location.
Zagreb Airport
Zagreb Airport is situated 15 kilometres from Zagreb.
If travelling by road to the airport, you will need to take the Velika Gorica road from the city centre.
The Zagreb Main Bus Terminal is situated outside of the Arrivals lounge at the airport. Duration of the journey into the city centre is about 25 minutes.
For the convenience of passengers, there are taxis situated just outside of the main terminal.
