With a Mediterranean climate and its location in the beautiful blue crystal waters of the Adriatic Sea just along the Med’s northern coast, the more you hear about the city of Split, the harder it is to resist!.

Home of the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace and the tennis players Ancic and Ivanisevic. The city of Split initially grew up around the stunning palace of the Emperor Diocletian back in the 3rd century AD. A combination of a military barracks and a sumptuous holiday residence, the palace once housed around 9000 residents. The old inner city of Split is considered as significant and invaluable as the palace and found itself included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site register.

Everybody or thing generally possesses a history of some description but Split has one that is considerably meatier than most! Split had such a mixed bag of occupation and ownership that it’s a wonder if it knew whether it was coming or going.

For the beginnings of the city of Split, we need to look no further than the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s extraordinary palace. The palace came first and the city is said to have grown up around it, prior to that the area belonged to the
Greek colonies. In the twelfth century, Split belonged to Hungary, then changed ownership to Venice in the fifteenth century where it continued right through the Middle Ages. After a quick session of Napoleonic Occupation which was then followed by the Italians having a go, Split was then put up with Austro-Hungarian rule. It was only after the major upheaval of World War Two that Split became a concern of Croatia.

Upon your arrival to the magnificent city of Split, after congratulating yourself on a well chosen location, what you should do next is to head over to the Grad or Old Town. Here you will be spoiled for choice of what direction to turn first with so many monuments so closely located.

The Diocletian Palace takes some resisting and the People’s Square is stunning with its fourteenth century walls and medieval contents.

While in Grad you have the seafront to enjoy as well as the open air market in the east of the area. The Marjan is found by following your nose towards the scent of pine and discovering the pretty traditional hillside Dalmatian cottages of Varos.

When you have exhausted yourself of the charms of the Grad, the coastal road opens up some more treasures towards the top of the Marjan peninsula. Such additional treasures include the ACI Marina, the Mestrovic Gallery and the Bene recreation ground.

In addition to the city’s boost in tourism, the business sector are increasingly interested in the advantages of relocating here. Almost overnight the city blossoming with trade and tourism here rocketing.

The airport here is the third largest in Croatia and its presence is responsible for its ever improving transport system. Passengers are able to easily fly to and from Zagreb and Frankfurt right across the year not to mention the huge influx of Summer visitors. Things are looking great and the city should see expansion of its main terminal in 2008.

Aside from the airport and the roads, there is the sea port at Split enabling visitors to travel here by any means possible. Popular ferry trips include those to and from Rijeka, Ancona, Dubrovnik and Pescara (in the Summer). Passengers from the middle Dalmation islands of Brac, Solta, Lastovo, Korcula and Hvar are received in the sea port of Split with perfect ease too.

Aside from the architectural and historic charms of Split, many people head over to the city for its annual music festival.
