This is one of the oldest of the Canary Islands and tourism only really began here in 1965. Prior to this, the first people to make Fuerteventura their home were the Mahoreros from North America. Residing in caves and underground habitats, the Mahoreros left their footprint in the form of cave drawings and remnants of their daily utilities discovered during excavations on the island.
The attractions here aside from the big waves on the north and west coasts which attract fans of the surf and all kinds of water-sports. Some of the best beaches you will ever see are here which are always a favourite amongst families and sun worshippers love the consistent sun rays for their fantastic suntans. The landscape here is perfect for hikers, 4x4 drives and cyclists to explore the island to their heartsí content. The endless miles of rugged volcanic landscape are peppered with stunning mountain scenery guaranteed to take your breath away. There is plenty more besides including the amazing sand dunes at El Jable and Corralejo and on the south coast, there are the delightfully tranquil bays and beaches always popular after one of those big boozy nights out on the town.
If you love mountains, particularly if you are a climber, one of the more popular peaks is that of Mount Jandia which is situated in the south of the island. Exceeding 800 metres, this is the highest you are likely to encounter on Fuerteventura.
Donít miss out on the experience of Fuerteventuraís neighbour Lanzarote only a short ferry journey between Corralejo and Playa Blanca allowing you to take the car and enjoy a spot of island hopping. There is additionally a fast ferry which only takes about twelve minutes.
